Recognizing the important role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the achievement of regional peace and sustainable development, and as it will soon undertake broader cooperation that includes Maritime cooperation and Connectivity*, the Philippine Ports Authority has enjoined all its Port Management Offices and RCs nationwide in the month-long celebration of ASEAN in August, highlighting the commemoration of its establishment on 08 August marked by the simultaneous flag-raising ceremony.

At the Port of Cagayan de Oro, all employees including the security personnel witnessed the first-ever hoisting of the ASEAN Flag in the PMO ground together with the singing of the ASEAN Hymn.

Since 01 August, ASEAN-related videos and other IEC materials are being shown to all port clients/customers at its Assessment, Billing and Cashier Unit (ABCU) in the CDO Port. The IEC materials were also cascaded to the PMO’s Terminal Ports in Balingoan and Camiguin.

The month of August is declared as Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) month and the 8th day is observed as ASEAN Day per Proclamation No. 282, s. 2017. This aimed at promoting and heighten the awareness of the public about ASEAN.

The Philippines was one of the five original members when ASEAN was established in 1967 along with Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. —IMR Lam
