PMO Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro and its Terminal Management Offices (TMO) participates in the conduct of the First Quarter of Calendar Year 2024 Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on 25 March 2024 at 0900H.

Pursuant to Rule 6, Section 7 of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of RA 10121 regarding the campaign to promote widespread public awareness on disaster preparedness, response and recovery exercises, the NSED, which is held quarterly, is done to evaluate the effectiveness of the earthquake response procedures and the preparedness of personnel in occurrence of a seismic event. In addition, the practice of effective communication and coordination among staff must be duly observed during the emergency response.

The drills commenced with the activation of the building fire alarm system to simulate the occurrence of a strong earthquake. Participants performed the “Duck, Cover, and Hold”, and after the deactivation of the alarm proceeded to the designated evacuation area in an orderly manner. Head count of personnel is executed followed by a communications net call, a radio reporting of status of injuries and damages, if any, as directed by the Incident Commander.

Search and rescue and medical emergency procedures was included in the drill at the PMO Admin Building 1, Port of Cagayan de Oro. A personnel was found to be missing during headcount and after assessment that the facility was safe, the victim was extracted and given medical first at the evacuation area. A grand total of 340 individuals (240 at the Port of Cagayan de Oro, 59 at TMO Camiguin, 30 at TMO Balingoan and 11 at TMO Opol), which includes PMO personnel, port locators, port workers and port users participated in the 1Q-2024 NSED.
