With the continued strengthening of security at transportation ports and terminals, the Port of Balingoan recently underwent an in-depth and comprehensive review by Maritime Security Auditors from the Department of Transportation – Office for Transportation Security (OTS) on 19-20 June 2024. Said audit aims to assess compliance of the Port based on the requirements of the National Security Program for Sea Transport and Maritime Infrastructure (NSPSTMI), a localized version of the ISPS Code, that cover all ports in the country’s port system including those under the Strong Republic National Highway (SRNH) program of the national government to ensure the safety and protection of passengers, cargo, and transportation facilities. The Port of Balingoan was previously certified and issued a Statement of Compliance of a Port Facility (OTS-SCPF No. 014-2019 (I)) by DOTR-OTS in 2019. This renewal audit involves compliance monitoring activities of the security measures implemented by the Port based on the NSPSTMI and the approved security plan.
The auditors diligently inspected terminal facilities, delicately queried port workers/employees on their knowledge/awareness on security policies and protocols, and also meticulously reviewed TMO Balingoan’s security plan and records. The audit also sought to not only check on TMO Balingoan’s compliance with the regulations set by the PPA and DOTr-OTS regarding security but also seeks to equip the organization with the capability to manage and thwart the security challenges or threats that may arise. Through the implementation of recommendations from audits, the Terminal Management Office of Balingoan continues to strengthen its dedication to public safety.
TMO Balingoan was established with the vision of being such an institution that provides a standard when it comes to the management and security of transport terminals. Under its jurisdiction is the Port of Balingoan which is an entry and exit point for travelers and cargoes to/from the Island Province of Camiguin, one of the popular tourist destinations in the Northern Mindanao. It caters mostly roll-on/roll-off (RORO) and conventional vessels that carry people and cargoes via the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH) central seaboard. Through this, the Port has been instrumental in the economic growth and development of the Provinces of Misamis Oriental and Camiguin.
