The Philippine Ports Authority – PMO Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro (PMO MOC) conducted a full-day seminar titled “Common Mental Health Conditions in the Workplace,” aimed at promoting mental wellness as an essential part of a productive and supportive work environment on June 20, 2025. The session was led by Dr. Frances Mae O. Gumapon-Lua, M.D., DSBPP, a respected psychiatrist and mental health advocate who brought both depth and empathy to the discussion.
Dr. Gumapon-Lua’s talk shed light on the mental health challenges often experienced in professional spaces—such as stress, burnout, anxiety, and depression—and how this impact not only individual performance but also team dynamics, workplace relationships, and overall organizational efficiency. Drawing on local data, she emphasized the growing need for mental health support in the Philippine workplace, especially amid a shortage of mental health professionals. Through this seminar, common misconceptions and stigma were addressed, helping employees develop a more informed and compassionate view of their own struggles and those of their colleagues.
What made the session especially impactful was the safe and supportive atmosphere that emerged toward the end. Participants—both regular and contract of service personnel—began to open up, sharing personal thoughts, emotions, and experiences. This collective moment of honesty helped ease each person’s burden, serving as a powerful reminder that mental health is not just a personal issue—it is a workplace priority. By prioritizing initiatives like this, PPA PMO MO/C reinforces its commitment to cultivating and promoting mental health in the workplace.
