Balingoan, Misamis Oriental — A new chapter unfolds for Northern Mindanao’s vital gateway to Camiguin as the President of the Republic of the Philippines, Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. inaugurated the newly completed Port Expansion Project at the Port of Balingoan on April 22, 2025, alongside Secretary Vince B. Dizon of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Daniel R. Santiago, Governor Peter Unabia of Misamis Oriental Province, and Acting Port Manager of PMO- Misamis Oriental Cagayan de Oro, Fernando B. Mapalo, Jr.
This milestone event brought together key officials from the DOTr, PPA, various National Government Agencies (NGAs), and Local Government Units (LGUs). It also marked a highlight of the 50th Founding Anniversary celebration of the Port Management Office of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro (PMO MOC)
The port now covers an area of 2.22 hectares (22,221 square meters) with upgraded Roll-on Roll-off (Roro) ramps, an open storage area, and a Port Operations Building (POB). The POB which spans over 3,000 square meters, replaces the decades-old passenger terminal, and signals a major leap forward in passenger service. Designed with a modern, high-ceiling, single-story layout, the facility can accommodate up to 500 seated passengers — a threefold increase from the previous terminal facility.
To enhance the travel experience, the new terminal features inclusive and accessible amenities, including gender-neutral and PWD-friendly restrooms, a dedicated children’s play area, food concessionaires, prayer rooms, and spacious passenger lounges. These improvements reflect a commitment to comfort, efficiency, and inclusivity for all port users.
With revitalized infrastructure and strategic location, the Port of Balingoan is poised to serve not only as a transport hub but also as a catalyst for tourism and economic development across Northern Mindanao. As the primary sea gateway to the island province of Camiguin, the port connects travelers to some of the region’s most stunning natural and cultural destinations.
With its doors now open, the new Balingoan Port stands ready to welcome travelers, support economic growth, boost regional connectivity, and help chart a progressive and dynamic future for the region.
