The Philippine Ports Authority β Port Management Office of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro (PPA PMO MO/C) strengthened its advocacy for a safe, respectful, and gender-responsive port environment through the conduct of a Seminar on the Safe Spaces Act (RA 11313), otherwise known as the βBawal Bastos Law,β on September 30, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Building 2 GAD Hall, PPA PMO MO/C.
The seminar gathered 26 male porters and provided them with a practical understanding of the law and its relevance to everyday interactions within the port community.
Serving as resource persons were Ms. Daisy P. Tangcalagan, Division Manager A, Administrative Division, and Atty. Roel Q. Madera, Acting Division Manager A, Port Services Division. Through relatable discussions and practical examples, they highlighted key provisions of the Safe Spaces Act, including appropriate conduct in public spaces and workplaces, and respect for personal boundaries.
The discussions also highlighted how seemingly casual words, gestures, jokes, or actions may cause discomfort or constitute inappropriate behavior when they cross another personβs boundaries. Participants were encouraged to be more mindful of their conduct and to recognize that respect should remain at the core of every interaction, regardless of oneβs position or role in the port community.
More than a discussion of legal provisions, the seminar emphasized that creating safe spaces is a shared responsibility. Through initiatives such as this, PPA PMO MO/C continues to advance its Gender and Development (GAD) advocacy and foster a port community grounded in respect, dignity, professionalism, and accountability.
